Shanks

Cathedral

Cathedral

Using this command, you can create cathedral shanks, especially useful to design fancy and vintage engagement rings with arms raising to support the gemsets on top.

Running this command will display its parameters in the Commands toolbar. Your first step should be to choose whether you want to start working on one of the styles offered by RhinoArtisan in the gallery of this command or to create a new one by editing the one that it is shown in the viewport.

On its parameters, you can find the ring size, measurements and the asset that will give shape to the shank, and options to add secondary gems with their setting style on this element among other possibilities.

When you confirm your changes, the Cathedral Shank will be listed on the Outliner toolbar.

Finger Size

Allows users to select different finger sizes to adjust the ring accordingly.

Profiles Parameters

  • Assets Editor: Custom edit the shape of the different parts of the ring.
  • Ring Top Width: Controls the top ring’s width.
  • Ring Top Height: Controls the top ring’s height.
  • Ring Bottom Width: Controls the bottom ring’s width.
  • Ring Bottom Height: Controls the bottom ring’s height.

Cathedral Shank

  • Width: Controls the shank’s width.
  • Height: Controls the shank’s height.
  • Angle: Controls the shank’s angle.
  • Tangent: Controls the shank’s tangent by slider.

Bridge

  • Enable Bridge: Toggles the bridge enabling.
  • Width: Controls the bridge’s width.
  • Thickness: Controls the bridge’s thickness.
  • Diameter: Controls the bridge’s diameter.
  • Fillet: Controls the bridge’s fillet.

Gems

Gems Toggle: Toggles between enabling gems.

  • Gems Size: Controls the cathedral gems’s size.
  • Min Distance: Controls the minimum distance between gems.
  • Vertical: Controls the vertical placement of the gem in conection with the cathedral’s shank.
  • Distribution: how the pavé rows are sized. By angle covers the arc set in Angle; By number sets exactly how many stones run down each side and works out the arc for you, the stones at the minimum distance from each other.
  • Angle: the arc of the band covered by gems, in degrees. Shown in By angle.
  • Gems per side: how many stones each side carries. Shown in By number; when the band would be covered by a single run over the top, the number is the stones of that run.
  • Inner width: Controls the width of the gems’s hole.
  • Inner height: Controls the height of the gem’s hole.
  • Bright cut: Controls the height of the edge between the ring and the gems.
  • Margin: Controls the distance of the gems from the top of the cathedral shank.
  • Inner Margin: Controls the distance of the gems from the bottom of the cathedral shank.
  • Gem Shape: Round or Square, picked from the icon list.

Prongs

Four icon buttons choose how the stones are held: Flush, Channel, Add Prongs and Cutters.

Flush

Flush cuts no channel: the shank is left as it is and the stones sit on it, with no prongs and no seat to tune. Use it as a clean starting point, or when a drill is all the stones need.

Channel

The default setting: a channel is cut along each row and the stones sit in it, without prongs. Its seat is set by Inner width, Inner height and Bright cut in the Gems tab. This is what older files saved as the “without prongs” setting, so they open unchanged.

Add Prongs

This option includes prongs for the gems and provides several parameters for customization:

  • Gem Inside: Controls the horizontal level at which the prong interacts with the gem.
  • Height: Adjusts the vertical height of the prong.
  • Extension Manufacturing (only in manufacturing mode): Manages the extension of the prong from the topside, useful in the manufacturing stage.
  • Move Z: Modifies the height position of the prong along the Z-axis.
  • Automatic Prong Diameter: Toggles the automatic adjustment of the prong’s diameter based on the gem’s dimensions.
  • Diameter: Controls the diameter of the prong.
  • Remove Channels: leaves out the channel under the stones, so the prongs stand directly on the shank. It is the same setting as the Remove Channels toggle of Cutters: switching it on in one shows it on in the other.

Cutters

The Cutters section allows users to establish cutting options and parameters for both standard and V-Cutters.

V-Cutters: Toggles between enabling V-Cutters.

Boolean: Toggles between enabling the cutters boolean.

Remove Channels: leaves out the channel under the stones, so the scallops are cut straight into the shank. It applies to Cutters and to Add Prongs only: Channel always keeps its channel, and Flush never has one.

Cutters Parameters

  • Start | Height: Controls the top height of the cutters.
  • Start | Width: Controls the top width of the cutters.
  • End | Height: Controls the bottom height of the cutters.
  • End | Width: Controls the bottom width of the cutters.
  • Length: Controls the length of the cutters.
  • Move in Z: Controls the vertical placement.
  • Move Middle in Z: Controls the center height of the Cutters.
  • Shapes: Toggles between the shapes in the cutters.
  • Mode: Toggles between the independence of the cutters towards the Start/End parameters.
  • Shape Scale: Controls the spectrum between round and squared shape by a slider.

V-Cutters Parameters

  • Start | Height: Controls the top height of the V-Cutters.
  • Start | Width: Controls the top width of the V-Cutters.
  • End | Height: Controls the bottom height of the V-Cutters.
  • End | Width: Controls the bottom width of the V-Cutters.
  • Length: Controls the length of the V-Cutters.
  • Move in Z: Controls the vertical placement.
  • Mode: Toggles between the independence of the V-Cutters towards the Start/End parameters.

Drill Settings

The Drill Settings section allows users to configure a drill hole under the gems. This includes toggling the drill on or off and adjusting its parameters to achieve the desired drilling effect.

Without drill: Deactivates the drilling feature.

Round Drill: Activates the drill and reveals its parameters:

  • Allow intersection: lets the drills cut into the neighbouring geometry.
  • Show drills: draws the drill solids in the preview.
  • Show cutters: draws the setting cutters (channel, scalloped cutters and V-cutters) in the preview. Each toggle sits on its own row, and switching one off hides that set without changing the ring.
  • Height Top, Height Crown, Height Girdle, Height Pavilion, Height Drill: Control, as percentages, the height of each stage of the drill profile.
  • Size Top, Gem Inside, Size Drill, Size Bottom: Control, as percentages, the width of each stage of the drill profile.
  • Type: Selects the shape of the drill: Gemstone Shape, Round, Square, or Hexagon.
